Abstract A web configurator is an application that allows its users to tailor a customizable product to their own needs by specifying their requirements through a graphical user interface. Configurators have been successfully applied to tangible products (e.g., cars, mobile phones) as well as intangible products like software (e.g., operating systems, ERPs) and services (e.g., insurance). A configurator user faces multiple decisions until she has addressed all the characteristics to be retained in the final product. In order to enable users to make the right decisions, with as low effort as possible, HCIs in configurators must be thoughtfully designed. Researchers have previously identified guidelines for HCI design by conducting empirical studies of existing configurators. In this vision paper we propose to draw HCI guidelines through a different approach, which consists in framing theories from the HCI community into the context of configuration models.

On Estimating a De Facto Population and Its Components

Abstract. This paper deals with estimating a population that is largely defined by the fact that its size, composition, and distribution are not readily accessible from census data in the U.S. and the other countries that use the De Jure concept of population. The population in question is based on the De Facto concept, which involves the estimation of people where they are found rather than wh...

An empirical study on product configurators' application: Implications, challenges, and opportunities

As computer systems, product configurators have been widely applied in practice for configuring a right amount of product variety. While studies have been reported to shed light on how product configurators’ application achieves time reduction and quality improvement in fulfilling customer orders, empirical investigations addressing the implications of product configurators’ application for com...

The Standards War Between ODF and OOXML: Does Competition Between Overlapping ISO Standards Lead to Innovation?

A strong belief exists that competition between de facto standards stimulates innovation and benefits consumers because it drives down the costs of products. The tenability of this belief, and its preconditions and limits, has been widely scrutinized. However, little has been written about competition between negotiated, de jure (i.e., committee) standards. Are competing de jure standards a goo...

Interactions among leguminous trees, crops and weeds in a no-till alley cropping system

Trees improve the soil quality and their rapid growth in the tropics make agroforestry systems potentially effective for establishing low-input agricultural systems in this region. This study assessed the effects of the biophysical interactions among leguminous trees, weeds, cotton and maize in an alley cropping system. The experiment comprised six treatments: Clitoria + Gliricidia; Acacia ...

Emotion Issues in HCI: Working Definitions and Gold Standards

The goal of this paper is to begin a conversation about two key issues regarding emotion in HCI. First, working definitions of emotion must be included in communications. These definitions provide a framework for asking questions, designing methodologies, and interpreting results. Second, gold standards for assessing the quality of human computer interactions should be established. Conceptualiz...
